Mngqithi Provides Update on Injured Sundowns Trio

Mamelodi Sundowns coach, Manqoba Mngqithi, has provided an injury update on three of his players.

Following the Brazilians’ 2-1 victory over Royal AM on Wednesday, 23 October, Mngqithi spoke to the media about the conditions of defender Kegan Johannes, forward Arthur Sales and right midfielder Erwin Saavedra.

“Kegan is very close [to returning to fitness],” the 53-year-old tactician commented on Johannes, who recently suffered a setback in his recovery from ankle surgery in April. “We are hoping for him to start full training probably, let’s say, next week, but he is very close.”

Regarding Sales – who has been injury-prone throughout his career – Mngqithi said, “He is also very close … he is training with the team. He should be back; if not this weekend, [then] probably next weekend.

“But it will depend on the competition within the group because he is coming from an injury, and other players are in top form at the moment,” he added.

As for Saavedra, who has also dealt with numerous injuries over the years, Mngqithi stated that he is “training fully.”

Mamelodi Sundowns are set to face Polokwane City this Sunday, 27 October. Although Johannes is still on the mend, there may be hope that we could see Sales and Saavedra in action for that match.
